Good Friday Afternoon!
It has been a very busy (and soggy) week here at Tygart Creek Elementary! Returning from spring break, we have been getting reacquainted with remaining focused and following school and classroom procedures. I can't say enough about the behavior of our Tigers! They are a wonderful group of young ladies and gentlement and it is evident in the way they carry themselves. They all represent us well.
This week kindergarten classes took a field trip to the planetarium at MSU and the movies. Among other things they were discussing the nght sky and different resources available to us in our surrounding communities.
We would all like to give a big congratulations to the Wise Fry Wordy Birds STLP Team who not only qualified for state competition at regionals held at MSU in October, but also advanced to the finals of judging in the area of instructional projects at Rupp Arena on March 26th and were named "Best In Region"!

Purposes of Writing
I'm sure that no matter what grade your child is in they do a lot of writing in various subjects throughout the day. Writing is a complicated thinking process which requires students to merge many different skills into one thinking process. You may see student writing comming home that is intended for one of these 3 purposes:
1. Writing to Learn (Learning Logs, Journals, Note Taking) - This type of writing is meant to be used as a tool to enable deeply embedded learning of many different subjects and skills.
2. Writing to Demonstrate/Communicate Learning (Essays, Constructed Response, Assessments) - When students are writing to demonstrate, they are being asked to share or communicate what they know about a topic for the purposes of evaluation. Students of all ages are asked to demonstrate their learning through writing in all content areas.
3. Writing for Authentic Purposes (Letters, Research Reports, Science Fair Summaries, Poems, Short Stories) - This type of writing is what we as adults do on a daily basis. It can include many forms. We often call it process writing at school because it often takes many days and different phases of work to get it completed for publication.
So, the next time your child brings home a piece of writing, hopefully its purpose will be more clear to you!
